To pull the wool over someone’s eyes is the inspiration behind today’s poem so I thought I’d share a link to the origin of this fun phrase. It sounds a lot more devious than this baaing poem and it makes being a shepherd sound a whole heap of fun!
I tripped over socks and
I tripped over dogs.
I tripped over words and
I tripped over the truth;
but none of these trips
were familiar
to me.
I thought I could hear
I thought I could see;
but all I was told was some gobbledegook
some sheep droppings,
sheep stockings,
a field full of mutton.
Baa to the humbugs,
I’m eating this tripe.
I’ll never understand
your need
for a gripe.
Catherine Johnson, 2013.
And here’s a lovely song called You Can’t Pull the Wool Over My Eyes, and I can’t help but laugh at the couple having a bar meal. I bet they have no idea they are on YouTube. Anyway have a woolless week everyone!
