Helicopter

My mother
always panics
when she can’t get hold of Helen.
Ironically
this time
I wish her phone had rung
and rung
echoing relief down the line.

Helicopter crash

Two dead
So lucky no more
early morning commuters.

Cars alight.
Occupants pulled free.

Fog
Helicopter
Crane
Driver climbing up the crane
so grateful to his kids
for waking up an hour late
And I am so relieved
along with mum

That you had already cycled
through.

I tried to put sloping line breaks in this but wordpress moved them :( I was hoping for some feedback, since I’d like to write a verse novel one day before I’m ninetly ;) The poem is the second draft of the one on the month of poetry blog.

Have you heard about the helicopter crash?

  1. Catherine, I’ve not heard about the helicopter crash, but your poem was very touching. I don’t know anything about writing verse novels, but there is an incredibly talented lady I know (a fellow Indiana SCBWI-er) who writes award-winning verse novels. Helen is slated to teach a workshop on how to write poetry novels at Highlights ( http://www.highlightsfoundation.org/workshops/where-story-meets-poetry-writing-the-poetry-novel/ ) if you’re interested. :)

    Happy weekend!

  2. Touching poem, Catherine. I did hear about the crash – vaguely, few details. And was very relieved that my daughter was home safe. (She had just spent twelve days in London with a school group.)

  3. Great poem Catherine. I tried putting some quotes I had found, on in slant but they too got messed up. Think I had to end up manually shifting them into place.

  4. Hi Catherine: Loved this poem. This is going to sound crazy, but it felt like order from chaos. Chaos is what I call the news. But you brought order & peace, and that’s always a great thing! (rhythm was nice too!)

  5. Hi Catherine:
Whenever I need the formatting to be specific, I make the layout a jpg and post it as an image or leave a link to a website that can show a graphic or image.

  6. I hope everyone is ok!

  7. I didn’t. But I can tell it is sad. :( Great poem.
